Artist statement:
“Ever since I recognized my own personal need to be surrounded with inspirational imagery, I have been creating images which nurture myself spiritually. Originally I began making icons as bas-reliefs in clay, with the final pieces made in cast composition paper and painted with either egg tempera or acrylics and decorated with gold leaf. Eventually the use of these bas-relief icons evolved into my work with copper in the form of jewelry and icons for personal altars. While my initial source of inspiration for my work was from traditional Byzantine icons, my current sense of icons has moved into a more loose translation of that concept.
Recently I have also been exploring sepia photographic imagery in combination with copper. A trip to Thailand last winter as a member of a theater troupe offered me the opportunity to immerse myself in the Buddhist culture there and expand my sense of sacred art. This trip resulted in the creation of my Faces of the Sacred Collection of jewelry and icons for personal altars. “
