Image Quality

Both the studio tour and juried show require that the artist submit photos to be judged.  Your help is needed to assure that your art work is represented by the best possible quality images.

Many artists struggle every year to submit good quality images of the proper size.  In the last few years, the quality of the pictures has been getting better, but many artists are still having problems with image size.  We’ve asked for images no smaller that 1024 pixels on the longer side.  Image size is important for two reasons: so that all art will be viewed at the same size by the juror, and so that the images are big enough to print in the brochure.

If you send an image larger than 1024, we will downsize it for you.  What we won’t do, is enlarge a too-small image, since this could compromise image quality.

Most commonly, images are mailed using a program that automatically resizes images.  You send great images, your computer decides to shrink them.  Double check your e mail program, and make sure that you’ve told it to send images full size.

In most cases, crop your image to your artwork.  The juror doesn’t need to see the frame (in most cases), the wall it is hanging on, or the interior of your home.  We actually got a photo one year that included a view down the hall and into the bathroom.  Really.

Title your images correctly: lastnamefirstinitial_title  that’s LAST NAME first.  When Mary Smith sends us an image titled marysmith_goodstuff she gets lost in the Ms, not down in the Ss where she belongs.  So, we get confused and spend extra time.

PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT EMBED IMAGES IN YOUR E MAIL, OR INCLUDE THEM AS PART OF A MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT.  Instead, ATTACH images to your e mail as high quality jpegs.

Most importantly, there is a real person on the receiving end of your email.  If you are having problems, let us know, and we’ll try to work it out.

Also remember that with roughly 600 images to handle every year, our time is limited.

Thanks for your help!
