Artist Statement:

In 1989, I cast my first stone wall while building my home in Port Townsend. Since that time my work has evolved into masks, pavers, totem poles, garden fountains, retaining walls and abstract sculptures.

Each piece is cast; face down in a bed of sand, using an array of materials such as recycled glass, metallic objects, stone and ceramics. It is similar to the print making process in that various objects are laid on a bed of sand and covered with mortar. The challenging and interesting aspect is in visualizing the image as if you are working from the inside of the piece. The final image is not truly discernable until the cured piece is raised. After the piece is cured, raised up and washed, the final image can be viewed. This is one of the most exciting moments of the creation, because it is discovering something new each time. I find this process itself to be informing and inspiring.

In addition, I am inspired by nature, spiritual images and a personal, quiet, inner space. I create shapes and images from these sources. I gather materials which speak to me and slowly the pieces come together to form art. Sometimes my art work makes a social statement, sometimes an observation from the natural world or a spiritual unfolding. At other times it is pure joy and quite whimsical. My creative process stems from being present in the moment and deeply listening, allowing the cosmic energy to flow, unfold and evolve. Creating art is a spiritual and meaningful experience for me.

Studio open during the remainder of the year by appointment.
