Artist statement:
Though I have been making baskets for many years, in the last ten years I have been stimulated by the color, texture and flexibility of industrial materials. My interest has been reinforced by my curiosity. How could these materials be shaped into artistic pieces that are worth saving, rather than being more pieces of junk to be thrown away? I haunt places that might have metals, strapping tape, pipe fittings, wire, cans, computer parts and paper. I have learned many new techniques for preparing materials for weaving. Simply handling and exploring these cast-offs leads me to experiment with new concepts for vessels and wall hangings. Mostly, I think the material “speaks to me” in some way, giving me an inspiration for its ultimate shape.
