Calligraphy
Demonstration:
“Calligraphy” means “beautiful writing.” Its illustrious history is a bridge between literature and art, from passion to contemplation, a marriage – or at least an affair – between the quote and its lettered vision At the studio, a room hung ceiling to floor with scribal art written by Sandy and her teachers over her thirty years of study. Books on calligraphy. A display of San Francisco’s Friends of Calligraphy exquisite magazines from the 1980’s. We start with a quotation or poem and look for the “hand”/visual image that enhances the meaning of the words. The tools of the scribe – pens, inks, papers – will be demonstrated. Visitors may try their hand from delicate first century Roman Cursive to today’s bold letterforms. Originally a painter, Sandy sometimes incorporated gouache and /or collage into the picture. Collage materials will be available for guests who wish to go beyond words.
