Demonstration
Because watercolor is a reverse process that involves layering that is
sometimes difficult to understand, I will provide samples that
demonstrate the way the process unfolds.

During my childhood in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, I had minimal exposure
to art and creative ideas. It wasn’t until I moved West in the early 70s,
and had raised my own children, that I discovered the artist that lived
inside me. After a very short foray into theatre arts, and a little longer
excursion into expressions in clay, on the magic beaches of the Olympic
Peninsula, I discovered the world of two-dimensional image making, and have
been held captive by it ever since.
My work is mostly done in watercolor or printmaking techniques. The
watercolors are created in a layered process that involves handmade papers,
fibers and some collage elements. The results are fabric-like in
appearance, with a familiar palette and subtle coloration. I do etchings in
small editions, usually of 20 or 30. The plates are made by exposing a
photosensitive surface to light and developing them non-toxically. In
addition, I enjoy the process of making mono prints.
From the beginning, the idea of balance has been the underlying focus of my
expressive process. The natural world inspires me, and the everyday deaths
and rebirths of existence provide the matrix of my imagery. This finds
expression through the contrast of light against dark, amorphous against
geometric, the new changing into the old changing into the new, as the moon
goes from new to full to new, as the autumn leaves become the winter ground
cover, become the life-giving summer soil, become the summer blooms.
Most recently, my work concerns itself with the earth’s resonance, that
regular pulsing earth rhythm that sustains and nourishes us all. Given the
stresses of modern times, my hope is that my work will serve as a reminder
of our source of nourishment, and the mutual give and take needed to
sustain the earth’s pulse in its natural rhythm and consequently our own.
