Statement

Batik is a wax resist technique used to color cloth through a single or multiple dyeings. The parts of the cloth not to be dyed are covered with wax to prevent the dye from reaching the fabric. Those areas left uncovered receive the color of the dye or blend with the colors of previous dyeing. Some of Sakura’s pieces have used as many as ten dyeings.

Sakura studied art in Germany and the United States, returning to Japan in 1967 to learn the technique of Batik. She found working with wax and dye to be an organic process of creation, where she becomes one with the medium. Since this start, she has gone on to win numerous awards for her work in Batik and other mediums, exhibiting internationally and teaching on the West Coast since 1971.

Today Sakura lives in Port Townsend where she enjoys the energy of spirit of the natural world all around her. From the icy crest of the Olympic Mountains in the West, to the shimmering of sunlight on Townsend Bay she is reminded of the childhood lessons of her father and the magic of the “perfect moment.”
