14th Annual Art Port Townsend Begins August 3rd
From August 3rd – August 26th, the Northwind Arts Alliance and the Port Townsend Arts Commission will present the Fourteenth Annual Art Port Townsend festival celebrating the visual arts. Rock Hushka, Director of the Tacoma Art Museum, is the juror for this year’s art show featuring Northwest artists. He considered over 430 entries submitted by artists from Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, and British Columbia. From the entries, 67 pieces were chosen to be in the show. The juried show, “Expressions Northwest”, will be on display at the Northwind Arts Center, 2409 Jefferson St., Port Townsend from August 3rd – August 26th. Northwind is open Noon – 5:00 P.M. and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Saturday, August 4th, 1:00 P.M. at Nothwind Arts Center, the show’s Juror, Rock Hushka, will give a free art lecture. Before joining the Tacoma Art Museum, Hushka held positions on the curatorial staff at the Seattle Art Museum and worked in the collections of the Henry Art Gallery at University of Washington. Hushka also serves as an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. While at the Tacoma Art Museum, he has curated more than 50 exhibitions. Mr. Hushka has worked to build the museum’s permanent collection, adding more than 1600 works by Northwest artists, ranging from major historical paintings by Morris Graves and Mark Tobey to recent digital media and conceptual works.
This year’s festival also celebrates the written word and how it relates to art. Surrounded by the juried Art Port Townsend exhibit, “Expressions Northwest”, writers will be invited to respond to individual works in the show or to the show as a whole. On August 23rd, 7:00 P.M. at Northwind Arts Center, writers will read their written responses to the juried show. Listeners are also welcome and there is no charge for the event.
The final event of the 14th Annual Art Port Townsend festival will be a Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., August 25th – 26th, featuring 37 artists in the greater Port Townsend area. Professional artists working in oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, printmaking, sculpture, foundry pours, ceramics, woodworking, fabric arts, glass and a variety of mixed media will open their studios for demonstrations and display of their work. Brochures with the art studio listings and maps are available at the Northwind Arts Center, 2409 Jefferson Street and other locations, as well as the Visitor’s Center. Visitors and tour goers may also log onto the web site www.artporttownsend.org to view art tour listings and maps. There is no charge for the tour.
