Demonstration
Weather permitting, I will be doing plein air oil
paintings on the deck attached to my studio during the two-day Studio Tour
period. I’ll start with a quick sketch of the scene, then do a small
(perhaps 5 x7 inch) trial painting. When this is done, and I’ve made
the necessary corrections, I’ll start on a larger painting. I may
follow this in the afternoon with a still larger canvas of the same scene,
or switch to a different view as the light changes. If there is bad
weather, I’ll either work on the view out the window, or perhaps work from a
photograph if it’s really dark and dreary. In either case, I’ll
explain the materials I use as I go along.
I’ll also use this opportunity to explain how I paint
on location, whether the locations are nearby or in Greece, which is one of my favorite
painting locales. I’ll tell what materials I take with me (both for
oil and watercolor) and how I handle weather extremes, bugs, and curious
children. Visitors will be able to look through sketchbooks and
photographs from various painting trips.

While I work in different media, most all my art begins
on location, out of doors. Sometimes I begin with a sketch and finish
in the studio; other times I complete the whole painting on location.
My experiences in Greece over the
last 30 years led me to focus on shadows and concentrate on clean colors,
but, recently, living in Port Townsend has intensified my interest in
painting nature. I’m very concerned about the damage to this beautiful
environment, and want to call attention to its beauty.
Directions
“Haroumeni Alexandra” Studio
Take
Discovery Road from the “Port Townsend” sign
(Honda dealer and Framing shop) to the intersection with Cape George Road. The
Discovery
Bay (former Chevy
Chase) Golf Club is at this intersection. Turn RIGHT on Cape George
(the only way you can turn). Drive 1.6 miles on
Cape George, until you come to Bellevue Drive on
the left. Bellevue is a small, gravel road but there is
a street sign. It is a few yards after milepost “6” on
Cape
George (the mile signs are
green and are on the left shoulder).
Turn LEFT on
Bellevue. Our driveway (narrow, gravel, lots of
vegetation) is the FIRST drive which turns RIGHT off of
Bellevue, only a few yards from
Cape
George. You’ll see
our number (“20”) on a red metal sign on a low stake. Turn right into
our drive and come on in! Park in the open area in front of or to the
right of the garage. You’ll see the entrance (double glass doors) down
the sidewalk.
