Mark Stevenson & Sarah Ohman
Bronze and Mixed Media Sculpture

Demonstration

Our studio is complete with workspace and tools for creating with clay, welding, mold making, and metal finishing for sculpture.  We do much of the work for casting sculpture into bronze here.  In addition to finished pieces, there will be sculpture in progress in clay and with various other media.  The processes of making rubber and plaster molds and of procucing wax copies of originals for lost wax casting will be explained with working examples.  Metal finishing techniques and patina skills will also be described.  A real “How do you do that, anyway?”

Statement

Artists Mark and Sarah produce bronze and mixed media sculpture that is influenced by allegory.  Story is infinitely compelling to the human spirit.  The visual and tactile medium of sculpture allows viewers to fill in the details of the story with their own narratives.

For many years Mark has worked with ideas derived from the geological forces that shape the Great Western landscape-tectonic plate movements, volcanic upthrust and subsidence, erosion and sedimentation.  Lately he has returned to figurative work with animals—Turtle, Eagle, Rooster—as seen through the lens of legend and with the human figure as seen through the lens of political transformation.  Sarah, educator and mother, tells personal stories with her work, influenced by the outlook of children and life among them.  Her work also articulates commentary, admiration, and remembrance.

The naming of Mark and Sarah’s studio—Carapace Arts—bears telling.  Carapace is the upper shell of a turtle.  Mythologies from many different cultures say that Turtle’s back is on the land, or that Turtle made the land, or that Turtle carries the world.  So by extension, the carapace is the land upon which we live.  Mark’s Turtle Island sculpture brought Sarah and Mark together.  But that is another story………
