Demonstration
I will demonstrate the use of recycled industrial
materials such as Venetian blinds, aluminum cans, paper and various metals.
I will have finished, partly finished and early phase baskets that I will be
working on. I will explain how everything is used and prepared.

I have been making fiber vessels for thirty years. My
interest began when I lived in Africa
during the 1960s and 1970s. At first I made utilitarian baskets. Then my
interest shifted to an emphasis on free form containers using materials
provided by the ocean, forest and wetlands. I collect or grow all my
materials and process them myself. My inspiration for a vessel comes
directly from the material I collect: it’s as though it "speaks to me" and
tells me how to shape it.
In the last five years I have been stimulated by the
color, texture and flexibility of human-made materials. This interest has
been reinforces by public attention to recycling and my own curiosity. I
began to haunt places that might have plastics, strapping tape, pipe
fittings and the like. I had to learn many new techniques of processing
materials. Three years ago I studied in
England
with Susan Garret-Wright, and this year with John Garret. Both are
proponents of using recycled materials in basketry.
